"Writing the Fight" Workshop

Below is a scan of an article printed in The Cutting Edge: Newsletter of the Society of American Fight Directors in 2006 describing the "Writing the Fight" workshop.  The purpose of this workshop is to give playwrights and dramaturgs a clearer understanding of the practical dynamics and dramaturgy of staged violence. It has since been taught several more times throughout the years at venues that include: the Region I Kennedy Center/American College Theatre Festival, as well as at The Last Frontier Theatre Conference, ATHE, Yellow Taxi Productions' Susan McIntyre Play Festival, and StageSource's Writing in Three Dimensions series.

A followup workshop, "Writing the Fight II: Stage Fights Envisioned and Actualized" was co-taught with Professor Andrew Hayes of DePaw University at ATHE in 2007, in which they examined scenes brought in by workshop participants and discussed how they might be executed in production based on the information in the script.

This workshop was the basis of a two part article on HowlRound:

    Writing the Fight: Part 1

    Writing the Fight: Part 2
